Environmental concentrations as ratios of random variables

چکیده
Abstract Human-induced environmental change increasingly threatens the stability of socio-ecological systems. Careful statistical characterization concentrations is critical to quantify and predict consequences such changes on human ecosystems conditions. However, while are naturally defined as ratio between solute mass solvent volume, they have rarely been treated such, typically limiting analysis familiar distributions generically used for any other variable. To address this gap, we propose a more general framework that leverages their definition explicitly ratios random variables. We show resulting models accurately describe behavior nitrate plus nitrite in US rivers salt concentration estuaries Everglades by accounting heavy tails potentially emerging when water volume fluctuates around low values. Models preclude presence related high probability extreme could significantly undermine accuracy diagnostic frameworks effectiveness mitigation interventions, especially soil contamination characterized (i.e. moisture) frequently approaching zero.

Distributions of Ratios: From Random Variables to Random Matrices
The ratio R of two random quantities is frequently encountered in probability and statistics. But while for unidimensional statistical variables the distribution of R can be computed relatively easily, for symmetric positive definite random matrices, this ratio can take various forms and its distribution, and even its definition, can offer many challenges. However, for the distribution of its d...
متن کاملAccuracy of error propagation exemplified with ratios of random variables
The method of error propagation provides a convenient tool for calculating mean and variance of a measurand from means and variances of primarily measured quantities. However, being based on a ~usually first-order! Taylor approximation of the measurement function, it only yields approximate results with unknown accuracy. We develop a method for estimating the accuracy of ~Nth-order! error propa...
متن کاملOn the Ratio of Rice Random Variables
The ratio of independent random variables arises in many applied problems. In this article, the distribution of the ratio X/Y is studied, when X and Y are independent Rice random variables. Ratios of such random variable have extensive applications in the analysis of noises of communication systems. The exact forms of probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF) a...
متن کاملProposition-valued random variables as information
The notion of a proposition as a set of possible worlds or states occupies central stage in probability theory, semantics and epistemology, where it serves as the fundamental unit both of information and meaning. But this fact should not blind us to the existence of prospects with a di¤erent structure. In the paper I examine the use of random variables in particular, proposition-valued random v...
متن کاملSOME RESULTS OF MOMENTS OF UNCERTAIN RANDOM VARIABLES
Chance theory is a mathematical methodology for dealing with indeterminatephenomena including uncertainty and randomness.Consequently, uncertain random variable is developed to describe the phenomena which involveuncertainty and randomness. Thus, uncertain random variable is a fundamental concept in chance theory. This paper provides some practical quantities to describe uncertain random variable...
